For this week’s Sunday Spotlight, I interview Ellen McKenzie of McKenzie’s on Main! I could really spend hours in that store! I love all the unique finds and I am especially loving all the Mardi Gras stuff!

What kind of store do you own?

McKenzie’s is an antique and gift store. We specialize in 19th century English and European Furniture. We also have a wide range of new decorative items and home accents as well as more gift-type items such as candles, jewelry etc…

What inspired you to open?

I lived in New Orleans for 12 years working in the Antiques business and when I decided I wanted to move back home, opening my own store seemed like the natural thing to do. I have always loved antiques and wanted to stay in the business.

What is your favorite part about owning your own store?

My favorite part of owning the store would be the search for new items—especially the antique ones. I love going to Market to get the newer items, but finding a one of a kind antique at an out of the way place is more like finding a hidden treasure.

What is your least favorite/hardest part about owning your own store?

My least favorite part would definitely be the stress during the slow times—the financial stress when things slow down especially during the summer months.

Do you have any favorite items in the shop?

My favorite items differ. Right now I have a beautiful late 18th century French Provincial Cherrywood Buffet that I love. What makes it special is that it has all its original keys. French pieces often had a different key for each drawer, cupboard etc…and this piece retains all three original keys, which is a pretty rare thing. I also love all holiday decorations so right now I am enjoying all the Mardi Gras decorations.

What roles do style and fashion play in your store?

In my opinion, style just has to do with how you present things. Most people think of style in terms of clothing, but I like to think my store has a certain style to it. The way I display my items has to represent my self, my store, and the item in the best possible way.
Do you have a style motto?

I don’t really have a style motto in terms of clothes, but in terms of my home I guess my Motto would be, “If you love something you can make it work with other things you love no matter how different they may seem.” What you love in each piece forms a common thread through all your well-loved pieces and brings them together at least for your eyes which what is what counts the most. So don’t be afraid to mix things up.

What are your future goals for the store?
My future goals would be to hopefully keep finding great antique pieces at good prices, which gets more challenging each year. In terms of Downtown I hope to continue to watch new businesses come into the area.

Anything you want to add?

Only thing I would add is that the idea of an Antique Shop shouldn’t scare people off. We have items here as low as $3. We truly try to have something for everyone at every price point.
