Today’s Outfit: Holiday Weekend

5.25.12

Are you guys ready for this holiday weekend? Right now, I am packing for Nola. I am going down there to look at a couch for my house.  I’m finally decorating/furnishing my house. It’s exciting but also a little overwhelming.  I’m hoping that by the end of it I will have enough organizational stuff that it will not only look more like me but also look neater. But right now it is messier than ever. Lots to do!

Well, I better finish packing before my sister-in-law gets off work and is ready to go! See you soon <3

Today’s Outfit: A Taste of Summer

5.21.12

Hello! I can’t believe there is only a week left before summer school starts :( I am so not ready to go back to reality. I haven’t even done anything that interesting over the break, but I have gotten a lot done! Right now, Andrew is helping me put together my new desk! I am very excited about it, but I don’t have any skills so I have been sent away from the tools.

I don’t really like extreme temperatures.  I don’t like it when it’s really cold and I don’t like it when it’s really hot.  I think we are about to get to the unbearable part of the summer, which means I am ready to hibernate! haha! I wish. I need to find somewhere to live that is lovely all year long. Oh well. I guess I should get used to the heat and go pretend to help Andrew put together my desk!

Today’s Outfit: Busy Little Missmaebee

5.19.12

Um. the last few days have been REDONKULOUSLY busy! My poor car broke down and wouldn’t  crank a few days ago. I knew it had to be serious, because she always tries her hardest to get me where I need to go.  Many moons ago when I was moving home from Florida, within the first thirty minutes, about a billion things broke and/or fell off.  And the torrential raining outside made it even more hilarious.  Luckily, Winston was with me and we fixed all the crucial things. But my point is, she still got us home! Without a mode of transportation, I was FORCED to play with the puppies, watch an unreasonable amount of Scrubs, and go swimming. It was really rough.  Also this week, I got my toliet and sink fixed, my alarm system, and my AIR CONDITIONING (yeah. that broke. good thing you didn’t have to smell me then…sorry to those who did)

All business aside, I have a a great afternoon ahead of me! That’s the good busy! I hope your Saturday is going well! See you soon

Take Off the Stripes, Fatty

5.15.12

Sorry for the jarring title, but I have a few things I need to say.

At first I was going to pretend that this outfit was planned around my recent frustration with More magazine for their style story on dressing plus-size women, but I was actually wearing this when I read it. Because I LOVE stripes! And they are everywhere right now.  All my favorite stores are stocked full with striped garments—dresses, shirts, pants, you name it. And the idea that “plus sized” women don’t DESERVE to wear stripes because they don’t fit in your mold is OPPRESSIVE.

I’m going to be honest with you guys.  I don’t think that many of you would be too upset about the style story I read.  I think that’s because the idea that fat women need to be told how to dress to hide themselves is not that foreign to most of us.  Daily I hear comments either in person or somewhere on the internet about other people’s outfits and how they are dressed incorrectly.  Today, someone I (used to) follow on twitter tweeted, “You. More spanx” Are you freaking kidding me? We are taught that if our bodies aren’t like the thin super models or movie stars, we need to hide them.  We’ve been taught this for so long that even the best of us have forgotten it’s something we need to be fighting against.

To me, fashion is about self-expression not oppression.  Maybe what your outfit says about you is, “I value comfort” and that’s OK. I don’t believe in shaming people for wearing sweats, and I don’t believe in shaming people for saying NO to spanx.  From tennis shoes to stilettos, from caped sleeves (a No-No according to More) to long sleeves, it doesn’t matter to me what someone else is wearing.  What matters is how they feel.

So dear More Magazine, thanks for the “advice,” but I think I got it from here.
