Sorry for the jarring title, but I have a few things I need to say.
At first I was going to pretend that this outfit was planned around my recent frustration with More magazine for their style story on dressing plus-size women, but I was actually wearing this when I read it. Because I LOVE stripes! And they are everywhere right now. All my favorite stores are stocked full with striped garments—dresses, shirts, pants, you name it. And the idea that “plus sized” women don’t DESERVE to wear stripes because they don’t fit in your mold is OPPRESSIVE.
I’m going to be honest with you guys. I don’t think that many of you would be too upset about the style story I read. I think that’s because the idea that fat women need to be told how to dress to hide themselves is not that foreign to most of us. Daily I hear comments either in person or somewhere on the internet about other people’s outfits and how they are dressed incorrectly. Today, someone I (used to) follow on twitter tweeted, “You. More spanx” Are you freaking kidding me? We are taught that if our bodies aren’t like the thin super models or movie stars, we need to hide them. We’ve been taught this for so long that even the best of us have forgotten it’s something we need to be fighting against.
To me, fashion is about self-expression not oppression. Maybe what your outfit says about you is, “I value comfort” and that’s OK. I don’t believe in shaming people for wearing sweats, and I don’t believe in shaming people for saying NO to spanx. From tennis shoes to stilettos, from caped sleeves (a No-No according to More) to long sleeves, it doesn’t matter to me what someone else is wearing. What matters is how they feel.
So dear More Magazine, thanks for the “advice,” but I think I got it from here.
